The story in four lines

  • FTX and Alameda put $5.32B into startups and tokens in 2021-22. If the bankruptcy estate had never sold, it would be worth about $66.7B today (12.5x). The estate sold it all for about $6.2B, the Anthropic stake alone for $1.34B.
  • The biggest piece is Anthropic. FTX's $500M became 44,539,240 Series B shares; after the 10-for-1 split that's 445,392,400 shares, 2.5% of the company by the share count in Anthropic's S-1 (Oct 26, 2026), about $47B. That's 1.85x CEO Dario Amodei's stake.
  • 38 buyers bought those shares from the estate in 2024 for $1.34B, at $30.0045 a share. The largest, ATIC (Mubadala, Abu Dhabi), paid $500M; its shares are worth about $17.6B now.
  • Customers have been paid about 105% of their claims so far, in November 2022 dollars. The estate's sales helped pay for that; the gains after the sales went to the buyers. The widely cited $75B (WSJ) and $80B (Forbes) figures ignored dilution and were 2.3x to 2.9x too high.
